Nuclear Costs

Estimates for new reactor construction costs continue to sky-rocket. Conservative estimates range between $6 and $12 billion per reactor but Standard & Poor's predicts a continued rise. The nuclear power industry is lobbying for heavy federal subsidization including unlimited loan guarantees but the Congressional Budget Office predicts the risk of default will be well over 50 percent, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill. Beyond Nuclear opposes taxpayer and ratepayer subsidies for the nuclear energy industry.

EDF: New Report Proves Ohio Nukes do not Require a Bailout under HB 6

New Report Proves Ohio Nukes do not Require a Bailout under

HB 6

EDF statement from Dick Munson, Director, Regulatory & Legislative Affairs

May 29, 2019

(COLUMBUS, OH) E-Cubed Policy Associates yesterday released a study confirming that FirstEnergy Solutions’ Davis-Besse and Perry nuclear plants are profitable, and that bailing them out under HB 6 would raise electricity rates for Ohioans while delivering no emissions benefits. These findings come just a day before the Ohio House of Representatives is likely to vote on HB 6, which would bail out FirstEnergy’s uneconomic power plants at a cost of $300 million per year and destroy state programs that encourage energy efficiency and clean energy. The report was written by Dr. Paul Sotkiewicz, president of E-Cubed Associates and former chief economist for PJM Interconnection.

“Independent research now confirms that the entire pretext for bailing out FirstEnergy’s power plants is bogus. Why should Ohioans be forced to bail out a profitable company?”

·        Dick Munson, Director, Regulatory & Legislative Affairs

Ohio old nuke bailouts: HB 6 accountability calls/emails/tweets needed

Action alert from Neil Waggoner, Ohio Campaign Representative, Sierra Club, Beyond Coal:

As many of you are now aware, HB 6 was approved by the House 53-43. HB 6 now moves to the Senate where it's expected to begin hearings as early as next week in the Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee. Becca will be distributing contact information for those committee members and info on hearings soon.

In terms of the vote today, we lost 10 Dems but picked up 17 GOP. We are working on getting an accountability email out in response to the vote but posted below is some contact information for these notable 27 votes. We need calls/emails/tweets into them ASAP thanking the NO votes and "spanking" the YES votes.

In terms of the 10 Dems, they need to hear from us on why we're disappointed in their vote.
In terms of the 17 GOP, they need a "thanks" for their no vote. It should be noted, however, the GOP no votes are not because they are climate or clean energy champions - in many cases they are opponents of the renewable and efficiency standards - but they were with us today because of various other reasons. All the same, we should acknowledge them voting the right way and encourage them to vote NO again in the future if the bill is sent back from the Senate.

Please let me know if you have issues with formatting of the tables below or have any questions.

NO NUKES! Anti-HB6 Protests Scheduled Across Ohio

SCHEDULED PROTESTS:

TOLEDO: Monday, June 3, 4:30 to 6:30PM, 300 Madison Ave. (Toledo
Edison Building.)

COLUMBUS: Wednesday, June 5, 4:30 to 6:30PM, Ohio Statehouse, corner
of 3rd and State.

AKRON: Friday, June 7, 4:30 to 6:30PM, Venue to be determined.

House Bill 6 would eliminate Ohio's energy efficiency and clean energy programs, and instead replace them with a charge on every Ohioan's electric bill that would go to bailout First Energy's crumbling, leaking Davis-Besse and Perry nuclear plants, as well as two coal fired plants, one in Indiana.

Opponents will be gathering at three locations across the state during the first week in June to protest this unacceptable nuclear power tax on Ohioans. Wind and solar power are cheaper and can easily replace both Davis-Besse and Perry plants. However, the Republicans controlling the Ohio state government are hostile to clean energy, and instead want to protect First Energy, one of the largest donors to the Republican Party.
