Physicians for Social Responsibility recently announced our 2018 Visionary Leaders Awards recipients. These distinguished individuals and organizations will be honored at our Awards Reception on November 8, 2018 at the Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center in Washington, DC.
Over the next several weeks, we will be highlighting the work of these recipients. We hope you will join us in celebrating their achievements!
Arjun Makhijani
Dr. Makhijani is the president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER) and has worked for nearly forty years on nuclear disarmament and even longer on renewable energy and energy efficiency. His work and that of his colleagues at IEER was part of U.S. grassroots efforts to shut down nuclear weapons plants at the end of the Cold War and to stop construction of a new nuclear weapons complex. His work also contributed to the efforts to get compensation programs for U.S. atomic veterans and nuclear weapons workers. IEER's analysis of the differential impact of radiation exposure on women and children (of which he is the principal author) contributed to the debate that led to its inclusion in the pre-amble of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. He was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2007 for "his tireless efforts to provide the public with accurate and understandable information on energy and environmental issues." He has a Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences of the University of California at Berkeley, where he specialized in nuclear fusion. Further information can be found in his curriculum vitae.
Earlybird pricing for the Awards Reception ends Sept. 15, so reserve your seats now.
