'They should be thought of as heroes': Why killings of environmental activists are rising globally

A Q&A between Shashank Bengali, L.A. Times reporter, and Wake Forest School of Law professor John Knox -- the UN's special rapporteur for human rights and the environment.

Anti-nuclear activists have also been harassed, and even murdered. This extends from the oppression (including killings) of anti-nuclear protestors in India, to the harassment of Vladimir Slivyak in Russia, the shooting of Tundu Lissu in Tanzania, and the likely murders of Karen Silkwood in the U.S., and Volodymyr Goncharenko in Ukraine, as but a few examples.

Trump's and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' abrupt cancellation of the Environmental Impact Statement public comment opportunity, and instead their arbitrary full-steam-ahead approvals for constructing the final leg of the environmentally unjust Dakota Access Pipeline

As but two examples, highlighted by Friends of the Earth via the Resist Trump Network, today, Wednesday, February 8, there will be an action at the White House in Washington, D.C. from 5-6pm Eastern, and also a day-long action at the federal building in San Francisco.

As announced by Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman, Dave Archambault II:

• A Native Nations march on Washington is scheduled for March 10. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and tribes across the country invite allies in America and from around the world to join the march.

"We ask that our allies join us in demanding that Congress demand a fair and accurate process," Archambault II said. "Our fight is no longer at the North Dakota site itself. Our fight is with Congress and the Trump

administration. Meet us in Washington on March 10."

• A Native Nations march on Washington is scheduled for March 10. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and tribes across the country invite allies in America and from around the world to join the march.

“We ask that our allies join us in demanding that Congress demand a fair and accurate process,” Archambault II said. “Our fight is no longer at the North Dakota site itself. Our fight is with Congress and the Trump administration. Meet us in Washington on March 10.”
