Nuclear Weapons

Beyond Nuclear advocates for the elimination of all nuclear weapons and argues that removing them can only make us safer, not more vulnerable. The expansion of commercial nuclear power across the globe only increases the chance that more nuclear weapons will be built and is counterproductive to disarmament. We also cover nuclear weapons issues on our international site, Beyond Nuclear International.

South Korean Police Raid Protest Camp Opposing THAAD Missile System

As reported by Democracy Now! on its morning headlines:

In South Korea, hundreds of protesters clashed with police in Seongju County on Wednesday over the deployment of launchers for a U.S.-built missile defense system known as THAAD. Dozens of protesters were injured at the overnight standoff when police attempted to disassemble protesters’ campsites and forcibly remove road blockades. The protests came as South Korea’s government said it expects the North to test-launch another intercontinental ballistic missile on Saturday. We’ll cover the escalating tensions between the U.S. and North Korea later in the broadcast.

Nuclear Age Peace Foundation: Tell Congress to act now to prevent nuclear catastrophe

Action alert from Rick Wayman, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation:

This may be the most dangerous time in human history. The Roman emperor Nero is remembered for having fiddled while Rome burned. We may be witnessing the far more dangerous Nuclear Age equivalent to Nero’s fiddling in the form of the nuclear threat exchanges between Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un.

Last week, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation penned an Open Letter to members of the U.S. Congress, urging them to act now to prevent nuclear catastrophe. Click here to read the letter and add your name.

As we write in the letter, "There are currently no restraints on the president’s ability to use the insanely powerful weapons in the U.S. nuclear arsenal, including using them in a first-strike attack rationalized as preventive war. To allow this set of conditions to persist would be a perilous, perhaps fatal, abdication of Congressional responsibility, posing severe dangers to the peace and security of the country and world."

North Korea Carries Out Strongest-Ever Nuclear Test

As reported by Democracy Now! on its morning headlines:

North Korea carried out its strongest-ever nuclear test Sunday, just days after the U.S. and South Korea wrapped up their massive joint military drills on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea has long objected to the annual drills, which include tens of thousands of troops. North Korea claims it tested a hydrogen bomb, although experts have disputed this claim.

On Monday, the U.N. Security Council met to address the test. U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley accused North Korea of "begging for war." President Trump tweeted, "The United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea." Experts say this proposal is next to impossible, since ceasing trade with China, Brazil, Germany, Mexico and other countries would be an economic catastrophe for the U.S.

Trump also blasted South Korea for being open to initiating peace talks with the North, tweeting, "South Korea is finding, as I have told them, that their talk of appeasement with North Korea will not work, they only understand one thing!" Trump is also preparing to withdraw from a trade agreement between the U.S. and South Korea.
