LOCAL RESIDENTS OPPOSE JAPAN’S DECISION TO DUMP
MORE THAN 1.25 MILLION METRIC TONS OF RADIOACTIVE WATER
FROM THE DAMAGED NUCLEAR POWER PLANT INTO THE PACIFIC OCEAN

WHAT:
To mark the International Day of Non-Violence on October 2, local residents will hold a march and a rally near the United Nations to oppose the Japanese government’s recent decision to dump more than 1.25 million metric tons of radioactive water from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean. They will comply with the CDC’s and New York State’s health guidelines, including practicing social distancing and face-covering, to protect themselves and others.
“We are very concerned that Hitachi’s Advance Liquid Processing System (ALPS) cannot remove all radioactive materials before the dumping,” said June Tano of Manhattan Project for a Nuclear-Free World. “The contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi is highly radioactive because it was used to cool the melted core of multiple nuclear reactors of the crippled plant that had meltdowns. We request the government to explore alternative safer options of long-term storage at the Fukushima Daiichi or near the site to minimize the health impacts on people and all living things as well as to protect the environment of the Pacific Ocean.”
“Our people have long relied on our oceans for various reasons, including transportation, sustenance, tradition, and economic development,” said Marisha Jones, a law student at the University of the South Pacific in Vanuatu and a representative of Pacific Youth Committee of Reverse The Trend: Save Our People, Save Our Planet (RTT). “We recognize the legacy of nuclear testing in the Pacific and will continue advocating against nuclear matters within our islands that will bring harm to our communities and homeland.”
“Many of the states in the Pacific have long suffered from the effects of nuclear testing and illicit dumping of radioactive waste by wealthy nations,” said Mari Inoue, attorney and co-founding member of Manhattan Project for a Nuclear Free World. “We must not forget that these communities have still been living with the threats of remaining contamination exposure, decimated environments, and generational trauma from nuclear testing.”

概要
10月2日の国際非暴力デーを記念して、ニューヨークの地元住民は国連の近くで行進と集会を開催し、事故を起こした福島第一原発から125万トン以上もの放射性汚染水を投棄するという日本政府の最近の決定に反対であることを表明します。 参加者はCDCとニューヨーク州の健康ガイドラインに準拠し、自分自身や他の参加者を守るために、お互いの距離をとりマスクをして集まります。
「私たちは、日立の多核種除去処理設備（ALPS）が海洋投棄前にすべての放射性物質を除去できないことを非常に懸念しています」と、核のない世界のためのマンハッタンプロジェクトのメンバー、田野純は述べています。 「福島第一原発の汚染水は、炉心融解し破損した複数の原子炉の核燃料を冷却するために使用された水であるため、放射線量が非常に高いものになっています。福島第一原発敷地内、もしくは周辺地域でので長期保管の方法についても、より安全な代替案として模索し、人々やすべての生物への健康への影響を最小限に抑え、太平洋の環境を保護するよう政府に要請します。」
