Nuclear Weapons

Beyond Nuclear advocates for the elimination of all nuclear weapons and argues that removing them can only make us safer, not more vulnerable. The expansion of commercial nuclear power across the globe only increases the chance that more nuclear weapons will be built and is counterproductive to disarmament. We also cover nuclear weapons issues on our international site, Beyond Nuclear International.

CodePink: Fire and fury? Hell no!

Call 202-456-1111 today!

TELL TRUMP: Don't provoke a war with North Korea. Negotiate, don't escalate. Send Secretary Tillerson to North Korea for peace talks.

SIGN & SHARE OUR PETITION!

CODEPINK.ORG/TILLERSON

Donald Trump’s belligerent threats to unleash “fire and fury” against North Korea is a reckless escalation of an already dangerous situation. We need to flood the White House with calls saying: “Don’t provoke a war with North Korea. Negotiate, don’t escalate.” Call 202-456-1111 between 9am-4pm EST.

If you are in the DC area, you can also join us anytime during our 24-hour emergency White House vigil from 5:00 pm today, August 9, till 6:00 pm tomorrow, August 10.

You can also sign our petition telling President Trump to send Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to North Korea for peace talks.

There is an urgent need to break the cycle of threats. U.S. military and economic pressure on North Korea, including a new round of stringent sanctions, provocative war games, and deployment of the THAAD missile system in South Korea, will not achieve peace. Instead, Trump’s threats of military intervention put the Korean Peninsula in danger of nuclear war.

Sixty percent of Americans, regardless of political affiliation, support direct negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang. Both President Moon of South Korea and Secretary of State Tillerson have called for negotiations. Tillerson recently said: “We would like to sit down and have a dialogue with them.” This is very different from the bluster of President Trump.

Diplomacy has worked to defuse the nuclear conflict in Iran. It can work in North Korea as well. Tell Donald Trump that negotiations are the only solution and he should dispatch Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to begin talks immediately. The world cannot risk a nuclear confrontation.

Call the White House, 202-456-1111, between 9am-4pm EST.

Democracy Now! on North Korea nuclear weapons crisis

In its August 9, 2017 broadcast (72 years to the day since the U.S. atom bombed Nagasaki, Japan), both during its headline news summary, as well as the rest of the hour, Democracy Now! gave extended coverage to the tense and escalating nuclear weapons crisis between the U.S. and North Korea. Host Amy Goodman's guest for the hour was investigative journalist Allan Nairn. Nairn also joined Goodman on election night 2016, during which he referred to Trump's electoral college victory as not only a national emergency for the U.S., but an international emergency for the entire world.

MoveOn: North Korea petition

Dear MoveOn member,

Today, Donald Trump threatened to unleash "fire and fury" against North Korea.1 Already, North Korea has responded—with threats to bomb the U.S. military base in Guam.

Donald Trump is making us all more unsafe with every unhinged comment, tweet, and threat. His rhetoric threatening North Korea is exacerbating a dangerous situation, putting the people of Guam—and everyone around the world—in grave danger. While a nuclear North Korea is a real concern, the answer must be diplomacy first, not a rush to a potentially devastating nuclear war.

Will you join me in demanding a diplomacy first approach, and an end to Trump's saber-rattling, which could lead to nuclear war? Click here to sign the petition, which says:

Stop the insanity. Don't provoke a war with North Korea.

Sign Jo's petition

With Donald Trump putting us on a potential pathway toward nuclear war with North Korea, the stakes couldn't be higher.

Please. Click here to sign the petition demanding diplomacy first with North Korea, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks for all you do.

—Jo, Anna, Stephen, Justin, and the rest of the team
