Beyond Nuclear is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) membership organization. Beyond Nuclear is organized exclusively for charitable, scientific and educational purposes. Specifically, the organization aims to educate and activate the public about the connections between nuclear power and nuclear weapons and the need to abandon both to safeguard our future. Beyond Nuclear advocates for an energy future that is sustainable, benign and democratic. The organization works with diverse partners and allies to provide its members, the public, government officials, and the media with the critical information necessary to move humanity toward a world beyond nuclear.

FOUNDING PRESIDENT
Dr. Helen Caldicott. Dr Helen Caldicott, has devoted the last 35 years to an international campaign to educate the public about the medical hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes in human behavior to stop environmental destruction. In the U.S. she co-founded the Physicians for Social Responsibility. The international umbrella group (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War) won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. She also founded the Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament (WAND and now known as Women's Action for New Direction) in the US in 1980. She is the author of numerous books and currently hosts a radio show in the U.S. - If You Love This Planet.
HONORARY CHAIRMAN
Ed Asner. Edward Asner (Nov.15, 1929-August 29, 2021). Ed was an American film and television actor and former President of the Screen Actors Guild, primarily known for his role as Lou Grant on the Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off series, Lou Grant. In 2009, he provided the voice of Carl in Up. He has described both Lou and Carl as the roles of a lifetime. He was a fiercely progressive humanitarian who embraced many liberal causes. We thank him for his dedication to a nuclear-free world.
THE BOARD
Claus Biegert (Munich, Germany; journalist, anti-nuclear activist). Claus Biegert is a writer, filmmaker, and journalist. He iniated the World Uranium Hearing, held in 1992 in Salzburg, Austria, which led in 1998 to the creation of the Nuclear-Free Future Award (NFAA). Claus directed the NFFA until 2019. The NFFA honors the mainly unsung heroes of the global struggle against nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Claus has made numerous documentaries, has authored books and articles, and has deep connections with musicians and activists, many of them members of indigenous communities in North America and around the world.
Kay Drey (St. Louis, MO; anti-nuclear activist). Kay Drey, now retired, has worked for more than four decades as an advocate for the protection of the general public, workers and the environment from the hazards of nuclear power and radioactive waste. She made her first speech against nuclear power on November 13, 1974 before a Missouri State Senate committee and today still conducts research and maintains a comprehensive library used by media, government officials and members of the public.
Karl Grossman (Sag Harbor, NY; professor and journalist). Karl teaches at the State University of New York/College at Old Wesbury. He has been writing and making television programs about nuclear technology since 1974. His books include: Cover Up: What You Are Not Supposed to Know About Nuclear Power and his television documentaries include Three Mile Island Revisited and The Push to Revive Nuclear Power.
Lucas Hixson (Chicago, IL- Nuclear Researcher). Lucas Hixson is a nuclear researcher from Chicago, Illinois. Lucas has actively partnered with various organizations to publish studies of operating and decommissioned nuclear power stations and nuclear weapons facilities across the United States. He also is the managing editor for Enformable Nuclear News, which is one of the top nuclear industry news services in the world. Lucas also is known for his familiarity with the Freedom of Information Act and his coverage of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.
Robert K. Musil, Ph.D. (Bethesda, MD. CEO of the Rachel Carson Council.) Bob Musil is only the third CEO of the Rachel Carson Council, founded in 1965 to continue Carson's legacy. The Council works to inform and advise the public about the effects of pesticides that threaten the health, welfare, and survival of living organisms and biological systems. Musil is also a Senior Fellow and Adjunct Professor at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University. He was for 14 years the Executive Director and CEO of Physicians for Social Responsibility. He is a graduate of Yale and Northwestern Universities and the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
Anna Rondon (Gallup, NM. Executive Director of the New Mexico Social Justice and Equity Institute). Anna Rondon (Diné) is Kinya’aa’aanii Clan, born for Nakai Dineh and is a lifelong advocate for the rights of Indigenous people and, in particular, members of the Navajo Nation who have suffered as a result of uranium minining and its deadly legacy. She is the Executive Director of the New Mexico Social Justice and Equity Institute, which works to end the health disparities resulting from decades of environmental degradation by the uranium mining industry, institutional racism directed at Indigenous communities, and multi-generational trauma. For the past 50 years, Anna has worked alongside many influential Indigenous leaders and her own spiritual advisors, which has deeply rooted her and educated her in how to navigate movement building at the various levels of organizing for change and justice.
Kurumi Sugita. (Grenoble, France. Founder of Nos Voisins Lontains 3.11 (Our Distant Neighbors 3.11). Originally from Osaka, Japan, Kurumi Sugita did her graduate studies in cultural and social anthropology at University College London, then in the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences) in Paris. She joined the Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique (French National Center of Scientific Research) in 1986. Kurumi founded the NGO Nos Voisins Lointains 3.11 in France in 2013. She set up a study of 70 Fukushima victims outside of the mandatory evacuation zones at the time of the nuclear disaster and has worked extensively with Fukushima accident victims, coordinating conferences and speaking tours for them in France and beyond. She is a member of Sortir du Nucléaire Isère, Stop Bugey (the oldest operating French nuclear plant) and CRIIRAD.
In Memoriam
Lou Friedman (1934-2016) (Canton, CT; consultant; peace and environment). Lou Friedman's 20 years in secondary education culminated as the Director of an alternative multi-cultural high school. He then worked as a consultant, facilitator, producer and press coordinator in international environmental and peace organizations such as Promoting Enduring Peace, EarthKind, EKTAS, Int'l. (Russia), PACE (Peoples Action for Clean Energy) and Beyond Nuclear.
Judith Johnsrud, Ph.D. (July 1, 1931-March 9, 2014). (State College, PA; radiation and nuclear power specialist). Judith's many decades of activism include work on: the geography of nuclear energy; its entire system of production, utilization, and waste isolation; radiation impacts on humans and the environment; and the problems of sequestration of "high-level," "low-level," and recycled radioactive wastes.
